20 ways to get the benefits of “mindfulness”

Your rewards for practicing mindfulness every day are mental, physical, metaphysical, emotional and sensual. Go get ’em!

Do at least one of these easy-peasy “mindful” practices every single day, because experiencing the right now, mindfully, makes you better. Get that state of mind that ultimately lets you lead the life you want to. It’s neuroscience.

  1. Take 10 super deep, slow breaths while thinking about how this feels.
  2. Take an epsom salt bath and just let your muscles melt.
  3. Smell some lavender essential oil or plant.
  4. Do plank pose for two minutes, eventually. Breathe through it all, like a noisy beast if necessary, to reap the full benefits of mindfulness. Then bask in the glow of your awesome physical power.
  5. Write in your journal or start a diary in Google Drive that you’ll have forever. Writing or typing your thoughts or questions always helps, somehow. Don’t worry about what you’ll write. Let it flow.
  6. Grab your headphones and listen to some weird, mystic binaural beats for at least 30 minutes.
  7. Sit still, identify the main feeling or emotion you are experiencing, rate its intensity from 1 to 10, and touch exactly where in your body it is occurring. (For information on how to flush it away in minutes, visit Tapping.com. I swear, this is life-altering.)
  8. Get a pumice stone or brush, a minty foot cream, and then give yourself a pedicure.
  9. Hug a pet, a human, or a plush toy.
  10. Get a bag of organic lemons and start your daily warm lemon water ritual today.
  11. Do some restorative yoga, the “lying down yoga”, using your sofa cushions, with a teacher on YouTube as your guide.
  12. Run in a park.
  13. Meditate in a darkened room with a candle for as long as you want.
  14. Lay down and visualize every single part of

your body relaxing, from tips of the toes to the top of your head. Don’t forget the jaw, throat, eyes, fingers, and abdomen. Take your time.

  15. Chant! Tina Turner does it. Learn a Buddhist mantra or sing this yogic one: Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu. (It’s a very nice thing to say and send out into the world.) Find a video online, and chant or sing along.
  16. Get some real, organic chocolate in bar or Mayan-style hot drink form, and just experience it slowly.
  17. Create something. Write some haiku poems about your apartment, draw a self-portrait, invent a font named after you, or write an embellished short story about the last time you rode public transit. Then share your art.
  18. Rehearse your karaoke song. You never know when you’re going to need it.
  19. Make tea. Black, green, red, white, or herbal.
  20. Think of a personal intention for the rest of the day or evening that you will apply to your upcoming rest, socializing, work project, or exercise. Make it a mini-goal that you wish would happen (that is achievable) during this period. Enter it into your phone as a reminder later, or write it on your hand and reconnect with your wish a couple of times.

Your rewards for practicing mindfulness every day are mental, physical, metaphysical, emotional and sensual. Go get ’em!
